Is their a way to rotate the artboard in adobe illustrator as you would a piece of paper while drawing?
in photoshop cs4 i can rotate the canvas with the touch ring on my wacom tablet..this is very convenient when drawing because it lets me rotate the canvas as if i were drawing on paper. i'm wondering if their is a way to do the same in illustrator.

Unfortunately no because Illustrator used an "artboard". You can rotate it but not as easily as in PS. Just go in Document Setup and you can change whatever you need for the artboard. On my Intuos 4 tablet, all the touch ring does in my Illustrator CS5 is zoom in and out.
By the way, I think the main reason is because in Illustrator you can easily just select all and rotate the design unlike PS. Probably best way to do it. Because if you rotate the artboard, it won't rotate the design anyway, just the artboard.
Yes, press Shift+O to enter artboard edit mode, then press enter to edit more properties. From there chose portrait or landscape. The artboart will rotate 90 degrees. All you have to do now is to rotate your artboard content (the artwork will not rotate with the arboadoard).
The next method is to enter artboard edit mode with the same Shift+O and inverse the width with the height of the artboard.
Illustrator is great! Graphic Designers tent to use Illustrator more than Corel Draw. Remember that Illustrator's specialty is Vector Imaging. If you want to draw art go with either corel draw or photoshop.
