In the book of Genesis, chapter 14, this priest was called the king of Salem.
The word Salem means "peace."
So this means Melchisedec is both the "King of Righteousness" and the "King of Peace".
Hebrews chapter 7 and chapter 6 tells who he is. He can be no mortal man.
Hebrews 7
1 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;
2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;
3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.
Hebrews 6
20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever
This is one of the best and most intellectually challenging questions on this forum in a long time. This is the kind of stuff I thought I'd be answering when I got here back in 2008, LOL! I believe Anne Catherine Emmerich thought Melchizedek was an angel, though I'm not certain such is the case.
He was both a king and a priest, but as there was no records as to his who his parents were, his birth and nothing was recorded as to the day he died and where he was buried, such things would be recorded today as no records or records not found and had he had no name ''John Doe'' or nothing known.
No he was just human and lived on this planet or people would not have written about him. He lived a very long time. In those days the earth was perfect and so he lived a long time before it got poluted.
Yes, he was. His priesthood came to him without consideration of who his mother and father were (unlike the Aaronic priesthood), and that priesthood order has no beginning or end (again, unlike the Aaronic priesthood). Melchizedek was a mortal man, the king of Salem, just like Adonizedek was after him.
Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils to Melchizedek, and received the blessing from him. (The lesser is blessed by the greater) And Christ is "priest forever to the order of Melchizedek", Psalm 110.
Does this generation not understand that the Lord Jesus existed before the Earth was even created. Jesus created the Earth. He spoke with Moses several times, and sat down (as Jesus) with Abraham and had a meal with him. And Yes He came as Melchizedek to start the Priesthood that Jesus would later be born into.
Melchizedek was the prince of Salem. Which means he was the prince of peace. Abraham tithse 10% to this person.
In the New testament Jesus is called the Prince of Peace it is my personal belief that Melchizedek was an earthly manifestation of the person that we called Jesus Christ.
It is my personal belief that he hung out on Earth with his creation and taught the people as a high to honor and to respect his father Jehovah.

Some Christians think he was the pre-incarnate Christ.
